GameStop Offering Free 3DS Game and Battery with 3DS System

Walmart isn’t the only one with a special offer on a handheld console today.  GameStop is offering a free 3DS game and a portable battery pack when you buy a Nintendo 3DS handheld. The offer is valid until June 30th. The offer doesn’t have as much games as the Vita offer at Walmart to choose from. Your choices are between two mere launch titles; Steeldiver or Pilotwings Resort. Regardless, might be something to look at if you’ve been thinking about picking one up for a while. Plus, with a bunch of titles already revealed at E3, you’ll know what to expect in the next year for the most part. Check it out here.

Mirror’s Edge Free on iOS App Store Today

If you’re looking for a fun scroller to play on your iOS Device this weekend and still haven’t happened to pick this one up, Mirror’s Edge for iOS is free for the day as part of EA’s Daily Deal event. While the iOS version isn’t as great as the original Mirror’s Edge, the game is smooth and has easy to use controls and at its current price, there’s no harm in picking it up. Note, the game isn’t an universal application so if you’re planning on picking it up for both iPad and iPhone, you’re going to have to download it twice. You can get the iPad version here (link) and the iPhone/iPod Touch version here (link).

Free OnLive Micro Console on Assassin’s Creed Revelations Pre-Orders

While In the Cloud gaming might not be found to be a great experience by everyone, this deal might be one to look at if you’re one of those people who’ve taken a liking to OnLive’s “In the Cloud Gaming” service. While I do prefer to own my games on physical media, I found OnLive to be a good way to try out games before buying the PlayStation or XBox version of a game.

OnLive’s most recent offer involves getting a free console with a pre-order purchase of a game. Gamers who pre-order Assassin’s Creed Revelations before or by November 19th on the OnLive service will receive a coupon code for a free Microconsole system so you can enjoy OnLive on your television like any other console. Sounds like a good deal. However, my advice about this, if you’ve never used OnLive, I’d recommend you download the computer client and try out a trial of a game and see how you like it. That way, you can take a test run for free. Depending on your internet connection or how far you are from their data centers, you might experience lag and it might not be worthwhile buying games on the service. If it runs smooth for you and you like it, then this is a great deal for you.

Steam to Offer Free Portal 2 and DOTA 2 to Compensate Users

Earlier this week, Steam forums were taken down due to an attack. Besides their forum security being compromised, Steam’s database containing user information was also breached. While the intruder(s) did get access to the server containing user credit cards and user information, Valve says it’s possible that Credit Card information was stolen but there’s no proof confirming yet. Regardless, Gabe Newell of Valve confirmed that the passwords in the database were hashed and salted and the credit card info, encrypted. In an e-mail response, Gabe Newell says the information was encrypted using AES256 (for those who don’t know, it’s impossible, if not extremely difficult for this encryption to be broken). Moving on, Valve will compensate users with free copies of Portal 2 and DOTA 2. To quote Gabe, “soon”.

Update: The announcement was a fake e-mail.

Portal is Free On Steam Until September 20

Heads up for those of you who have happened to have never played Portal; Valve has Portal available for free for a limited time. Users can download Portal for free on Steam until September 20th. Once you install Portal before the 20th, the full game is yours and will remain that way.

What’s the reason for giving it away temporarily? Valve is doing this to help promote their “Learn with Portal” program, an educational project aimed at teaching school-aged children about science. What better way to do this than allow them to play a Science powered game. Once again; if you’ve never bought Portal, now’s a good time to grab a freebie and maybe even pick up Portal 2 while your at it. Come on, do it for Science.
